First edition of Pore Lil Mose: His Letters to his Mammy. Oblong quarto, illustrated cardstock covers, bound at spine with string. [36 illustrated leaves], some loss to [8pp], last three leaves bound at rear with loss and tears. Covers are soiled from handling, in delicate condition. Occasional pencil marks. The featured character, Lil Mose – the prankster, is the first cartoon strip in the United States to feature an African American leading character.
Comments: The illustrator of this book, Richard F. Outcault, is considered the pioneer of the modern comic strip. He created The Yellow Kid and the Buster Brown series.
