Comments: These letters were falsely attributed to General Washington in 1777 in an attempt to discredit Washington’s support for the revolution. They were published in 1795 due to Washington’s support of the Jay Treaty. He was forced to disavow them publicly in 1797. Many think the letters were written by the son of Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Franklin Bache. Washington suspected they were written by John Randolph, a congressman from Virginia.
