Light soiling to cloth, bumped lower corner. Offsetting to front endpaper. In the publisher’s near fine dust jacket, $3.50 on front flap, faint sunning to spine, bright illustrations on both covers. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Herman C. Mergenthaler, Esquire, with great respect and appreciative of his contributions to the United States of America. Frank L. Howley.”
Brigadier General Frank L. Howley (1903-1993) served as American sector commander of Berlin after World War II. His nickname of “Howlin” Howley was due to his hard-line interactions with the Soviets, also occupying Berlin. Upon his retirement, he was an administrator at New York University and the author of numerous first-person accounts of World War II.
