Susan B. Anthony crossed out the publisher’s name and address to write in her own on the title page of this salesman’s sample of History of Woman Suffrage. Due to consistent financial strain, editors Stanton and Gage sold their book rights to Anthony before publication of the third volume. Anthony purchased the publication rights from Fowler and Wells, likely the reason she struck out their name here. She valued this work not for its monetary gain, but instead “as a most valuable means of educating the people.” (Harper, The Life and Work of Susan B. Anthony, pp. 612-614)
