“’Ive looked on a lot of women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times.” – Jimmy Carter in this edition of Playboy Magazine from 1976.
Leading up to the 1976 presidential election, many Carter advisors worried the candidate looked too pious. They believed that a candid Playboy interview would humanize him and “take care of his religious problem” with his democratic base. Reflecting on the public outcry more than 30 years later, Carter believed that it cost him a substantial lead in the election, but stood by his words and their meaning.
