First edition of Beggar on Horseback by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly, in first state dust jacket.
Octavo, 237pp. Black cloth, title on orange label affixed to spine and cover. First edition, with no additional printings mentioned on copyright page. Bookplate affixed to front endpaper. Fold-out newspaper clippings included, originally affixed to book between Part I and Part II, now in delicate condition, broken at seams and fragile. In publisher’s first state jacket, $2.00, reinforced at hinges with archival repairs, toning to spine, but overall bright illustrations and vibrant colors, a very good example.
Beggar on Horseback played on Broadway in 1924 and ran for 223 performances. It was released as a silent film in 1925 by Paramount Pictures and the play was revived in 1970 for a short run at the Lincoln Center.
