Description

The first edition, third printing of A Street In Bronzeville by Gwendolyn Brooks, her debut collection of poetry.

Octavo, vi, 57pp, [1]. Black cloth, title stamped in gilt over orange printed bands. Stated “third edition” on the copyright page. Previous ownership inscription on the front free endpaper. Internally clean, solid text block, a near fine example. In the publisher’s second state dust jacket, $2.00 on the front flap, “No. 2322” on the rear panel, no mention of “War Bonds” on the rear panel, chipping along top edge, a closed tear along spine hinge, a very good example.

Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000), a renowned author, was the first African American to receive a Pulitzer Prize. Her book of poetry, Annie Allen, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry on May 1, 1950.
