The First edition of Adam Bede by George Eliot, in three volumes. Octavo, [three volumes], [viii], 325pp, [3]; [viii], 347pp, [2]; [vi], 333pp, [3]. Bound in quarter blue morocco, marbled boards, title in gilt over red morocco, raised bands, and six compartments. Matching marbled endpapers and marbled leaf ends. Previous ownership bookplates affixed to front endpaper. Half-title appears in each volume, but lacking advertisements, which were typically bound into Volume III at publication. Dampstain to top corner of Volume II and rear endpaper of Volume III. Overall a very clean copy, with no foxing or toning. (Baker & Ross, A4.1)
