Handwritten letter from former President Rutherford B. Hayes, while at his home in Fremont Ohio, in 1891.
Letter measures 5.5′ x 7.25. Housed in custom blue cloth chemise, title in gilt on the front cover. Includes JSA authentication. The letter was previously mounted, residue on verso. Previously folded twice.
The letter reads: “Spiegel Grove / Fremont, O. / 21 Oct. 1891 / My Dear Sir – I beg you to receive my thanks for the kind expression in your letter born of the 4th, and for the friendly spirit which prompted you to write. Sincerely, Rutherford B. Hayes / Gen. Geisel / New York.”
Spiegel Grove is the estate and former home of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States, located in Fremont, Ohio. The property spans over 25 acres and includes the Hayes family mansion, which was constructed in 1859 and expanded in 1880. Hayes moved permanently to Spiegel Grove after his presidency in 1877 and lived there until his death in 1893. The estate also includes the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums, established in 1916 as the first presidential library in the U.S. Both President Hayes and his wife, Lucy Webb Hayes, are buried on the grounds.
