Inscribed on the front endpaper by Admiral Keyes, with a quote by Winston Churchill in Keyes hand: “The use of recriminations about the past is to enforce effective action at the present. Winston Churchill / House of Commons / 29.5.36.” This copy is presented by the author to Herbrand Sackville, the 9th Earl De La Warr, a former British cabinet minister.

Admiral of the Fleet, Roger Keyes, (1872-1945) was a British naval officer, member of the House of Commons and the first Director of Combined Operations during World War II. While in the House of Commons, he played a pivotal role in the Norway Debate, which resulted in a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and rise of Winston Churchill.
