Rear Admiral John D. Ford (1840-1918) entered the Navy as a third assistant engineer in 1862. Ford worked his way through the ranks while progressing his education in mechanical engineering. He was fleet engineer for the Pacific Squadron in 1898, serving aboard the USS Baltimore during the Battle of Manila Bay for Admiral of the Navy George Dewey. This second edition includes a chapter specifically dedicated to the Battle of Manila.
