The author of this work, James Grant Wilson (1832-1914) was an American author, editor, and Union Army officer best known as a biographical and historical compiler in the post-Civil War era. Born in Edinburgh and raised in the United States, Wilson served as a colonel of the 4th U.S. Colored Cavalry and later held brevet rank as brigadier general, then settled in New York literary circles, helping to found the Holland Society and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.
