In publishers first state dust jacket, fine condition, with $30.00 retail price on front flap. Inscribed by author to academy award nominee and decorated WWII soldier Charles Durning. Inscription reads: “To Charles Durning, One of those brave men of D-Day who fought for our freedom. These are my personal thanks and tribute. Sincerely, Stephen Ambrose. June 6, 1997.” An exceptional first edition copy, with a unique historical association.
Comments: Charles Durning appeared in 200 movies during his lifetime, including Tootsie, Dick Tracy and O Brother, Where Art Thou? He was nominated for an academy award for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and To Be or Not to Be. During WWII, he participated in the landing at Normandy. He received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for this valor during World War II. Charles Durning passed away in 2012 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
