Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster wrote this book, Dereliction of Duty, in 1997, as part of his master’s thesis at the University of North Carolina. He called the loss in Vietnam a “uniquely human failure,” with the war being lost in Washington, D.C., not the battlefields of Vietnam. In 2017, McMaster was asked to serve as the 26th National Security Advisor for President Donald Trump.
