Comments: Robert M. Gates wrote “From The Shadows” in 1996, shortly after finishing his service as the director of CIA. In the interim he would serve as the president of Texas A&M. In 2006, President George W. Bush would ask him to replace Donald Rumsfeld as the secretary of defense. In 2008, President-elect Barack Obama would ask Secretary Gates to stay on as the secretary of defense, making him the only secretary of defense to serve two presidents of different parties. He retired in 2011 after the successful raid on the compound of Osama Bin Laden.
