General William F. Dean (1899-1981) was a U.S. Army officer best known for his service during the Korean War, where he commanded the 24th Infantry Division. Dean participated in the Battle of Taejon, earning the Medal of Honor despite being captured and spending three years as a prisoner of war. His military career spanned World War II and the Korean War, marked by his leadership and tactical expertise. After his release and return to the United States, he wrote about his wartime experiences in General Dean’s Story (1954), offering insights into his captivity and the challenges of war. Dean retired as a major general in 1955 and continued to advocate for military readiness and leadership.
