General Winfield Scott, from the Great Commanders Series by Brig. General Marcus Joseph Wright, inscribed by the author to a fellow confederate officer, John F. Mayer.

Octavo, xii, [2], 349pp, [1], [4pp ads]. Light green cloth, title stamped in gilt on cover and spine. Complete with frontispiece portrait of General Scott and five full page maps. Foxing to title page and frontispiece portrait, otherwise clean. Solid text block, top edge gilt.

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “Capt. John F. Mayer / from his friend / the author / Washington D.C. / July 1894.”

Marcus Joseph Wright (1831-1922) was a Confederate brigadier general during the American Civil War. Wright served under General Braxton Bragg and took part in the battles at Shiloh and Chickamauga. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1863. After the war, Wright was appointed as the agent for the Confederate Archives in Washington, D.C., where he compiled and preserved many important historical documents. His work contributed to the publication of the “Official Records of the War of the Rebellion.” Wright also authored several books on the Civil War and Southern history. He died on December 27, 1922, in Washington, D.C.
