Octavo, [5], 314pp. Brown cloth, title stamped in gilt. Stated “first edition” on copyright page. Rubbing to title on spine. Clean text throughout. Gift inscription on front pastedown endpaper. In publisher’s first state dust jacket, $3.00 on front flap, light toning to spine, chipping along both edges, a scarce example in this condition.

Signed on the front free endpaper: “J.M. Wainwright. General. U.S.A.”

General Jonathan M. Wainwright was the Commander of Allied Forces in the Philippines at the time of their surrender to Japan in the early days of World War II. Upon the surrender of the Philippines and Corregidor, Wainwright became the highest ranking American prisoner of war during World War II. He would be released in August of 1945. He would receive the Medal of Honor and return to the United States with a ticker-tape parade in New York City.
