Description
The first edition of Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, in the scarce first state dust jacket.
Octavo, [vi], 1037pp, [5pp, blank]. Original gray cloth, title in blue on spine and front cover. The first printing, with “Set up and electrotyped. Published May, 1936” on copyright page, with no mention of other printings. Solid binding, light soiling to top edge of text block, internally clean. Light offsetting to endpapers. A very good example. Housed in custom brown leather clamshell, title in gilt on spine over black morocco label. Includes the publisher’s first state dust jacket, with all points, including the $3.00 retail price on the front flap, and “Gone With The Wind” appearing in right side column of the “Macmillan Spring Novels” advertisement on back panel. Several closed tears to jacket, previously repaired with tape on the verso, chipping along top edge, front hinge showing notable wear, bright illustrations, a solid example of this scarce jacket.
This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was adapted into a feature film in 1939. According to a Harris Poll in 2014, this book remains the “second favorite book of American readers, just behind the Bible.”
