In 1939, Good-bye, Mr. Chips was adapted into a film of the same name and was nominated for seven Oscars at the 12th annual Academy Awards. An exceptionally competitive year, Robert Donat’s portrayal of Mr. Chips beat out Clark Gable for his role in Gone With the Wind. Other notable films from that year included Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Wuthering Heights and The Wizard of Oz.
