In 1877, Ulysses S. Grant embarked on a world tour lasting from May 17 to September 20. He traveled through Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, visiting England, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Egypt, Palestine (including Jerusalem), Ottoman Empire (including Constantinople, now Istanbul), Greece, Russia, China, and Japan. Grant was received warmly in most countries, leveraging his status as a former President of the United States to engage in diplomatic efforts promoting peace and economic cooperation. He chronicled his journey in a series of letters later compiled into a book titled “Around the World with General Grant.”
