The Carter Center began to spearhead the effort to eradicate Guinea Worm Disease in 1986. At the time, there were 3.5 million cases annually. Through their mitigation efforts, cases have fallen to less than 50 per year. This pipe filter prevents the intake of the parasite. Guinea Worm Disease is poised to be the first parasitic disease eradicated without the use of vaccines or drugs, largely due to the efforts of the Carter Center.
