Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, becoming the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. Imprisoned for 27 years for his activism against the apartheid regime, Mandela became a global symbol of resistance to oppression and a champion of human rights. After his release in 1990, he led efforts to dismantle apartheid and foster reconciliation, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his contributions to peace and justice.
