History of Woman Suffrage

Salesman's Sample

Signed by Susan B. Anthony, salesman’s sample of History of Woman Suffrage, Volume I, edited by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Matilda Joslyn Gage.

Octavo, [irregular pagination]. Original maroon cloth, title in gilt on front cover. Twelve full-page portraits with tissue guards, including frontispiece. Thirteen leaves of sample text. Four blank leaves for subscribers’ information. Includes one binding sample of two on rear pastedown. Remnants of label on front cover. Light wear to spine and corners, front hinge starting. Inscribed on the title page by Susan B. Anthony. Provenance: Hindman Auctions, 2022.

Susan B. Anthony crossed out the publisher’s name and address to write in her own on the title page of this salesman’s sample of History of Woman Suffrage. Due to consistent financial strain, editors Stanton and Gage sold their book rights to Anthony before publication of the third volume. Anthony purchased the publication rights from Fowler and Wells, likely the reason she struck out their name here. She valued this work not for its monetary gain, but instead “as a most valuable means of educating the people.” (Harper, The Life and Work of Susan B. Anthony, pp. 612-614)
