Octavo, [304pp]. Dark brown morocco, gilt border on front and back covers. Five raised bands, title in gilt on spine. Stated “Published December, 1909” on copyright page. Gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Pocket at rear endpaper holding two maps, beginning to pull away from endpaper. Solid text block, a few small scrapes to exterior, a near fine example. Double-page frontispiece. (Czech 178)
Percy C. Madeira, Sr. (approx. 1863-1942) was a Philadelphia socialite and coal operator. He embarked on an expedition with his wife to East Africa when exploration of this area was growing in popularity, visiting at similar times as Theodore Roosevelt and Frederick Courteney Selous.
