Alger Hiss (1904-1996) was a U.S. government official accused of being a Soviet spy and convicted of perjury in 1950. He worked for the State Department and was involved in the establishment of the United Nations. His conviction was based on testimony and evidence presented by Whittaker Chambers, though his guilt remains debated.
