On March 24, 1989, an Exxon Shipping Company oil tanker struck Prince William Sound’s Bligh Reef and spilled over 10 million gallons of crude oil into the sound. The remote location made the cleanup process lengthy and challenging. The spill led to the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, which specified the liability of future oil spills and added regulations for damages and cleanups.
