Octavo, [8]. 138pp. Red cloth, title printed in black on spine, title on front cover with illustration. Stated “first edition” on copyright page. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $2.00 on front flap, bright illustrations, a scarce fine example.

Signed on the title page: “For Phyllis Levita / ‘What are you fighting for?’ – p. 73 / John Hersey / November, 1983.”

Into the Valley was John Hersey’s second work, following Men on Bataan. His next book, A Bell for Adano, would earn him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1945.
