Octavo, [two volumes], 369pp, [map]; 370-664pp, [4pp ads]. Black cloth, title stamped in blind on front cover and in gilt on spine. Yellow topstain, publisher’s patterned endpapers. Stated “Third Printing March, 1938” on copyright page, with first and second printings completed before initial publication. Solid text blocks, faint dust remnants to top edge, a near fine set. Housed in publisher’s slipcase, but lacking glassine dust jackets.
Signed by the author on the front flyleaf of both volumes.
Thomas Mann (1875-1955) was a German novelist and essayist known for his exploration of intellectual and moral dilemmas, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929. Joseph and His Brothers is Mann’s monumental four-part novel series retelling the biblical story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. Originally published between 1933 and 1943, the series includes The Stories of Jacob, Young Joseph, Joseph in Egypt, and Joseph the Provider.
