Description

First edition of Captain Joseph Andrews’ Journey from Buenos Ayres, presented by the author to distinguished soldier and member of Parliament, Sir George Murray.

Octavo, [two volumes], xxxii, 312pp; viii, 321pp. Original boards, title on paper labels attached to spines. Light toning to endpapers, a few finger marks to text pages, mild foxing throughout Volume II. Occasional corrections to text in ink, which appear to be contemporary and may be in the author’s hand. Untrimmed pages, some with ragged edges. Spine ends chipped with some loss, corners rubbed and worn, wear to bottom edge of boards, light soiling to covers. Spines cracked on both volumes, Volume I is completely separated at pages 208/209, Volume II is holding by one thread at pages 128/129. Previous owners’ name label on front pastedown endpaper of each volume with offsetting to opposite page.

Inscribed by the author on verso of title page of Volume I: “The Right Honorable Sir George Murray MP GCB &c. – respectfully by the Author.” Similar inscription by author on title page of Volume II. Housed in a custom brown cloth clamshell with title on buckram spine label. (Sabin 1509) A nice example of this South American travel account in its original boards.

“Captain Andrews was sent out during the Mining mania, by one of the numerous London Associations, and in these two volumes, gives a very clear, sensible, and modest account of his journey and subsequent proceedings in execution of his trust. They are well worth any one’s reading, both for the entertainment to be derived from them, and the information they occasionally convey.” (Sabin 1509)
