Description
The scarce Book Club edition of Laura by Vera Caspary.
Octavo, 237pp. Full red cloth, title stamped in maroon on front cover and spine. Lacking “1943” date on title page, indicative of the book club edition. Solid text block, light toning to edges, faint toning to hinges. In the publisher’s dust jacket, price clipped, with some chipping to corners, a few short closed tears, sunning to spine. Advertisement for war bonds on rear flap, in place of first state “psychothrillers” announcement. Front panel illustration remains vibrant. A nice copy of a popular thriller.
(The Dark Page I, 54)
Vera Caspary (1899-1987) was an American author and member of the Communist Party under an alias. Laura was Caspary’s best-known work, originally released in a seven-part series in Collier’s magazine from October to November 1942. This copy is a book club edition of the fully compiled series and was adapted into a film of the same name in 1944 starring Gene Tierney.
