Description

Fourth printing of Letter from Birmingham City Jail by Martin Luther King, Jr., published July 1963.

Octavo, 15pp, [1]. Publisher’s original printed wrappers, bound at spine with staples, title on front cover. Stated “Fourth 7-63” on rear cover, following a first issue in May of 1963. Faint soiling to covers, short closed tear on front cover near staple. A near fine example.

The first partial appearance of Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham City Jail” was in the New York Post Sunday Magazine on May 19, 1963. The American Friends Service Committee was the first to receive permission to publish King’s letter in full, which appeared in late May of 1963. This copy is the fourth printing, from July 1963.
