An inscribed copy of Major Campaign Speeches of Adlai E. Stevenson, a first edition, third printing of this important work by Adlai Stevenson. Octavo, 320pp. Green leather, gilt title on spine, inscription on front board. Presentation edition to campaign donors, with limitation and signature of the Stevenson campaign manager. Signed and personally inscribed to Mr. James S. Lanigan, a New York politician. Inscription reads: “To Jim Lanigan – a dear friend and wise councilor on a harried journey through public life – Adlai E. Stevenson. Christmas 1953.”

Comments: James S. Lanigan was a reform party politician in New York City, best known for defeating Tammany Hall politician Carmine DeSapio. Mr. Stevenson was Governor of Illinois from 1949-1953. He was the democratic candidate for President in 1952 and 1956, losing both times to President Dwight Eisenhower. He finished his career as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations under President John Kennedy.
