Map is centered on Europe and drawn on Mercator’s Projection. Full map measures 19.5″ x 25.1″. Previously folded into twelve parts, wear along folds, some beginning to separate. No repairs to verso. Includes seven inset maps. A rare piece and unique look at the world in 1851, with noted condition issues.
Unique features include the routes taken by Captains Cook, Furneaux, Ross, Vancouver and de La Perouse. Antarctica is only partially depicted and Alaska is represented as “Russian Territory.” The Arctic Ocean is partially mapped, with large parts of the Yukon Territory still unknown. Central Africa is labeled as an “Unexplored Region.” The seven inset maps include: Pitcairn’s Island; Juan Fernandez Islands; Norfolk Island; Republic of Liberia (Monrovia); Sandwich Islands; District of Columbia; and Palestine.
