Comments: Mikhail Gorbachev was the eighth and final general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. His book, Perestroika, details his “restructuring” of the Soviet state to overcome economic stagnation that had plagued the country for many years. His wife, Raisa, was an advocate for the preservation of Russian cultural heritage. She died from cancer in 1999.
