Octavo, [two volumes], xi, [1], 596pp; xi, [3], 594pp. Black cloth, title stamped in silver on spines. “Special Kansas City Edition Limited” stated on both copyright pages. Top edge dyed green, both volumes. Light wear from handling along spine of Volume I. Volume II fine, appears unread. Both volumes with illustrated front endpapers. In the publisher’s “Kansas City Edition” dust jackets, $5.00 retail price on front flaps, “Kansas City Edition” stated on spines, light sunning to spines, closed tears to volume I, with two archival repairs to verso. Housed in custom gray cloth slipcase. Both handsome examples.
Inscribed by President Truman in Volume I, Year of Decisions: “To the Honorable + Mrs. C.P. LeMire / with kindest regards and with appreciation of their long time friendship. Harry S. Truman / Independence / Jan. 24, 1956.”
Judge Clarence P. LeMire (1886-1961) of Kansas City was appointed by President Truman to the Tax Court of the United States for a 12-year term. LeMire practiced law in Missouri for over 25 years, served three years as the assistant Attorney General, and was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1927-1928. President Truman was an honorary pallbearer at the funeral of his friend “Cap” in 1961.
