Octavo, [three volumes], xix, 871pp, [6]; xxxi, 863pp, [3]; xxvii, 996pp, [2]. Full tan morocco, title in gilt on spine, inlaid black morocco beret, raised bands. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles. Each volume in a black cloth slipcase, lined with velvet cloth, light shelf wear to each.
The foreword of Volume I, written by General Montgomery’s son, David Montgomery, is signed by the author.
Includes a limitation page from Zaehnsdorf, but the limitation is not specified in this set. A beautiful production.
Two other known examples of this work have appeared at auction, both with a limitation of 25 copies, signed by Nigel Hamilton. They were bound for specific subscribers, by arrangement of the publisher.
The author of this work, Nigel Hamilton (1944-2022) was a British-American biographer known for his works on military and political figures. His notable books include the Monty biography, which won the Whitbread Award for Biography. He also wrote JFK: Reckless Youth (1992), a detailed account of John F. Kennedy’s early life, and a three-volume biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s wartime leadership, starting with The Mantle of Command (2014). Hamilton was a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and held academic positions at various institutions, including the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
