With the investigation and eventual resignation of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, the Nixon administration was desperate to nominate a vice presidential candidate who could withstand congressional scrutiny. Former House Minority Leader Gerald R. Ford was the candidate they chose, after giving consideration to California Governor Ronald Reagan, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller and former Texas Governor John Connally.
