Octavo, ix, [3], 264pp [4pp ads]. Brick red cloth, title in gilt on spine. Top edge stained mauve. Stated “First Published in 1938” on copyright page. Light toning to endpapers, light foxing to text pages and page ends. Spine ends lightly bumped and rubbed, shelf wear along bottom edge of covers. Binding is solid, slight lean to text block. Previous owner’s name stamped on front free endpaper, bookseller’s label on front pastedown endpaper.
Lacks original dust jacket, has facsimile jacket for attractive presentation. (Currey, page 310) A nice example of this scarce first book in the author’s Space Trilogy.
Out of the Silent Planet is the first installment in C.S. Lewis’ science fiction epic known as the Space Trilogy or Cosmic Trilogy. It was followed by Perelandra in 1943 and That Hideous Strength in 1945.
