Octavo, [two volumes], 584pp [Vol. I]; 647pp [Vol. II]. Publisher’s deluxe full black morocco, raised bands, title in gilt on spine, stamped in blind with elaborate boarders. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Both volumes with faint wear to leather, Volume I with wear along bottom edge and along seam of spine. Finger soiling limited to Chapter I of Volume I. Frontispiece portraits of Grant with tissue cover. 50 illustrations, maps. (Dornbusch, Volume II, 1986) (Eicher 492). An exceptional set.

Published shortly after his death, the Personal Memoirs of President Grant are held in high regard by historians and general readers alike. President Grant was initially opposed to writing his memoirs, but wished to leave his family financially stable after his death. The books were sold in multiple formats, ranging in price from $3.50 to $12.00 in 1885.
