First edition of the Personal Memoirs of U.S.Grant, in publisher’s deluxe full sheepskin binding.

Octavo, [two volumes], 584pp [Vol. I], 647pp [Vol. 2]. Publisher’s sheepskin binding, 4 raised bands, gilt title over red and black morocco labels, marbled leaf edges. Light wear to hinges and top edge of spine, but a solid text block. Frontispiece portraits of Grant with tissue covers. Previous ownership inscription in both volumes, dated 1885 and 1886. Over 50 illustrations, maps. (Eicher, 492) (Dornbusch II, 1986) From the library of George Edward Hunton (1839-1916) of Abilene, Kansas. Hunton served in the First Maine Cavalry from 1861-1863, when he resigned due to injuries sustained during the war. This set of Grant’s Memoirs is an exceptional set of the full sheepskin binding.

Published shortly after his death, the Personal Memoirs of President Grant are held in high regard by historians and general readers alike. Grant was initially opposed to writing his memoirs, but wished to leave his family financially stable after his death. The books were sold in multiple formats, ranging in price from $3.50 to $12.00 in 1885.
