Octavo, [two volumes], 584pp [Vol. I]; 647pp [Vol. II]. Publisher’s green cloth, title in gilt on spine, decorative gilt emblem on front cover. Floral endpapers. Frontispiece portraits with tissue covers. Clean text, lightly read copy. Toning to both spines, wear to cloth along bottom edge of the spine, light rubbing to front panel of volume II. Front hinge of Volume II starting to separate. Illustrated with 43 maps and fold-out plates. (Dornbusch II: 1986) (Eicher 492) Includes a laid-in cabinet card of General U.S. Grant and his family at Mt. McGregor, Saratoga County, NY, dated June 19, 1885. This photograph was taken about a month before Grant’s death. Also includes a presentation letter from Brown University, gifting this set in 2013.

Published shortly after his death, the Personal Memoirs of President Grant are held in high regard by historians and general readers alike. President Grant was initially opposed to writing his memoirs but wished to leave his family financially stable after his death. The books were sold in multiple formats, ranging in price from $3.50 to $12.00 in 1885.
