Richard James Oglesby (1824-1899) was an American politician and Union Army general during the Civil War. Born in Kentucky and raised in Illinois, he served in the Mexican-American War before becoming a prominent Republican leader. Oglesby was elected Governor of Illinois three times (1865-1869, briefly in 1873, and 1885-1889) and also served as a U.S. Senator from 1873 to 1879. A close ally of Abraham Lincoln, he played a key role in promoting Lincoln’s political career.
