Eight volume set of Plutarch’s Lives, published in London in 1770 and 1771.
Twelvemo, [eight volumes]. Full calf, title in gilt over red morocco spine labels, raised bands with six gilt-ruled compartments, each volume individually numbered in gilt. Engraved frontispiece in Volume I by J. Miller after J. Thornhill. Engraved headpiece portraits within each individual volume. Speckled edges. Two bookplates in each volume, from the estate of Edward Owen Vaughan Lloyd (1857-1914). Clean text throughout, all eight volumes with sound bindings. Points of wear to the tips of each spine, all hinges solid. A scarce set.
This translation was first published in 1680 and remained the standard until a new translation was completed by the Langhorne brothers. (ESTC N20531)
