This “Prologue” was composed by John Fante in 1938 as a letter to his editor at Stackpole Sons after the publication of his first novel, Wait Until Spring Breaks Bandini. The letter was likely written to reignite the agency’s interest in another novel from Fante, which would eventually become Ask the Dust. The letter was never sent, but was later discovered by Fante’s widow in 1983.
