4pp. Tape repair to spine, else fine. Signed above title by President Rutherford B. Hayes: “To Horatio Rust, With the Compliments of R.B. Hayes.” President Rutherford B. Hayes was accompanied to this rally in Columbus by William T. Sherman, who was not scheduled to speak, but was encouraged by the crowd to do so. He spoke extemporaneously and would make the most memorable comments of his career: “There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but boys it is all hell.”
Comments: Horatio Rust was a major in the Civil War and was widely known for his archaeological studies and collection of antiquities. After moving to California, he was instrumental in the founding of the Pasadena Public Library.
