Description

The first edition of Roll, Jordan, Roll, with text by Julia Peterkin and photographic studies by Doris Ulmann.

Octavo, [8], [9]-251pp, [6]. Blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. No mention of later editions. Black top stain, decked foredge. Light sunning to tips of cloth, internally fine. Period gift inscription on front endpaper, dated 1934. Complete with 75 photographic plates, including a frontispiece portrait. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $3.50 on front flap, archival tape repairs to verso, front hinge reinforced with Japanese tissue, chipping at spine, a very good, but delicate example of this scarce jacket. (Blockson 3932)

This collaboration between Ulmann and Peterkin focuses on a group of former slaves and their descendants in the Gullah region of South Carolina. It was preceded by a signed limited edition of 350 copies, numbered and signed by Julia Peterkin and Doris Ulmann.
