James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) was a writer, educator, lawyer, diplomat, and civil rights activist. He is best known for writing the lyrics to “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black National Anthem, which became a rallying cry for the Civil Rights Movement. Johnson’s multifaceted career included serving as a leader in the NAACP, a U.S. consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua, and a professor at Fisk University.
