Octavo, xv, 388pp. Publisher’s three quarter brown morocco, decorative gilt on spine, raised bands. Light rubbing to boards, front hinge showing wear, but solid. Marbled boards. Gilt top edge. Frontispiece portrait of William McKinley on India Paper, with tissue cover. Marbled endpapers. Black cloth slipcase, with previous auction tag on label affixed to side panel.
Inscribed on the second free endpaper: “For Hon. J.K. Richards / with cordial regards. William McKinley / Sept. 26, 1900.”

John K. Richards (1856-1909) served as the Solicitor General of the United States from 1897 to 1903 during President William McKinley’s administration. Richards previously served as the Attorney General of Ohio from 1892 to 1896, during McKinley’s tenure as Governor of Ohio. Richards stayed on as Solicitor General after McKinley’s assassination and, in 1903, was appointed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals by Theodore Roosevelt.
