The Cincinnati Directory, published in 1842, with the scarce “Plan of Cincinnati” map.
Twelvemo, [x], [11]-156pp, [3]. Original hardcover, calf spine with paper over boards. Title and trim in gilt on spine. Solid text block, light wear to front hinge, still sound. Loss to bottom inch of spine, heavy wear to corners. Foxing to text, remains clear and legible. Include a directory for “colored citizens” of Cincinnati. Fold-out map at front of volume details the city of Cincinnati and its infrastructure as it appeared in 1842. Lightly toned, otherwise fine condition. (Sabin 13085) A scarce work.
The first Cincinnati Directory was published in 1819, detailing the local government, distilleries, canal systems, shipping project and prominent citizens. It was followed by a second edition in 1825, but only a small number were printed, making them exceptionally scarce.
